Fitness to Practice (FTP)

The Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre Fitness to Practice (FTP) Clinic provides free practical support and advice to nursing and dental professionals under investigation by the Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC) and the General Dental Council (GDC).

We are a student led service that provides assistance to those who do not have Union representation and cannot afford private legal support. The students are supervised and assisted by lawyers with fitness to practice experience.

We can provide assistance with:

  • an NMC or GDC investigation;
  • providing a response to NMC or GDC case examiners;
  • help preparing for a fitness to practice hearing including an interim order application, interim order review, substantive hearing or substantive order review; and
  • making a referral to solicitors or barristers who may be able to offer pro bono representation.

If the NMC or GDC have confirmed that you are under investigation, please contact us.

You can contact our service at any point in the NMC or GDC investigation, however the earlier in the investigation you make contact, the more likely that effective practical support and advice can be provided.

The Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre is committed to offering its students and local community opportunities through collaborative work. We focus on offering employability skills to undergraduate law students and beyond and supporting causes that are in line with our ethos and QMLAC values.

One of these collaborations is with Future Leaders UK on our community mentoring scheme. This long-standing collaboration offers undergraduate students across the university the chance to mentor A-level students from East London.

We also run a scheme known as Advocates for Change which offers court marshalling to students, aiming to get more state school students into the Judiciary.

Please contact us on legal-advice-centre@qmul.ac.uk if you are interested in working with us on something new!
