Immigration Permission Information
The information on this page does not apply to:
- British and Irish citizens
- Distance Learning students studying outside the UK
This page explains what you will need to provide in order to:
- Prove that you hold the correct immigration permission
- Prove that you have arrived or are in the UK
- Respond to our request for further documentation
Relevant policy documents:
- Student Immigration Policy (Located under 'Student fees and terms and conditions' in the Policy Zone)
Information on documents you may be required to provide
Within the Pre-Enrolment task, you will be presented with a list of types of immigration permission / visa. Depending on which type you hold, you will be asked some further questions. You can then upload or input the information to evidence this.
The types of immigration permission that you can choose along with what documents or information we expect you to provide can be found below under 'Immigration Permission Types'.
How to provide us with your evidence
You can provide us with your immigration documents via the Pre-Enrolment task in MySIS.
As part of Pre-Enrolment, you are asked to indicate whether you are already in the UK or have not arrived yet.
If you are in the UK when completing Pre-Enrolment, you will be asked to provide evidence of your current immigration permission or status and evidence of your arrival in the UK by uploading certain documentation, depending on your type of immigration permission. This may include:
- your UKVI decision email (the notification that your visa or ETA was approved)
- your vignette (visa sticker) in your passport (if you were issued with one)
- evidence of your entry to the UK such as your boarding pass or flight/travel ticket (in your name and showing your arrival date)
- eVisa share code
If you are outside the UK when completing Pre-Enrolment, once you have arrived, you must return to the 'Immigration Permission (Visa) Details - Part Two - Visa Upload' section of Pre-Enrolment and confirm that you are now in the UK. Once you have done this, you will be asked to select which immigration permission you hold. You will then be able to upload the relevant evidence of your immigration permission and proof that you are now in the country. It is only after you have provided all documents required that you can progress to Queen Mary Enrolment.
When to complete Pre-Enrolment
We encourage you to complete Pre-Enrolment in MySIS as soon as you are invited to do so. You can start Pre-Enrolment from outside the UK in order to receive your tuition fee invoice and you do not need to wait until you have arrived in the UK.
As part of the Pre-Enrolment task, you will see a section titled 'Immigration Permission Details - Part One - UK Arrival Status'. Here, you will need to inform us whether you are already in the UK or you have not arrived yet.
- If you are already in the UK, you should complete Immigration Permission (Visa) Details - Part Two - Visa Upload and answer the appropriate questions, uploading your documents.
- If you are not in the UK yet, you should continue with your Pre-Enrolment and complete the task. Once you have arrived in the UK you should return to Immigration Permission (Visa) Details - Part Two - Visa Upload, confirm that you are now in the country, answer all questions asked and upload your documents.
You can complete Pre-Enrolment whilst overseas but note that your enrolment will not progress until you have arrived in the UK, returned to complete 'Immigration Permission (Visa) Details - Part Two - Visa Upload' of the Pre-Enrolment task to inform us that you are in the country and have uploaded your documents.
All sponsored students should arrive in the UK and upload their documents by the latest date of enrolment recorded on their CAS.
Do you have Settled status in the UK?
If you have Settled status in the UK, you should be aware that whilst:
- you may not hold a physical visa document as such or
- have a time limit on your stay in the UK,
Settled status is still immigration permission and you are required to demonstrate your immigration status via a share code to confirm that you have immigration permission to remain in the UK, therefore an eVisa.
Please follow the instructions in the 'Immigration Permission (Visa) Details - Part Two - Visa Upload' section of Pre-Enrolment Task to be able to provide us with a share code to verify your eVisa.
Students studying on a programme lasting less than 6 months
The immigration permission information required during Pre-Enrolment will depend on your nationality and whether you had to apply for a visa in advance of travel to the UK.
If you are a visa national you will need to upload a copy of your entry clearance vignette (yellow visa sticker in your passport).
If you are a non-visa national, you should have been granted an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before you travelled and you will need to provide a PDF copy of your approval email in the task. Upon arrival in the UK, you may have been given an ink stamp from an immigration official or you may have entered via eGates.
We ask that you complete Pre-Enrolment as soon as you have access to it and you can do this from outside the UK and become Pre-Enrolled. However, we will not attempt to proceed with Queen Mary Enrolment until you have re-entered the Immigration Permission (Visa) Details - Part Two - Visa Upload section of the Pre-Enrolment task and submitted all documentation required, including evidence that you have arrived in the UK so that we can complete a Right to Study check for you.
Students studying on a programme lasting 6 months or longer
As part of Pre-Enrolment, you must provide us with evidence that you have valid immigration permission to study at QMUL or a status that permits you to study in the UK. Our sponsor licence number is 11W8K9Y63 and if your Student visa is for another institution, we may not be able to proceed with your enrolment (some exceptions apply).
We ask that you complete Pre-Enrolment as soon as you have access to it and you can do this from outside the UK and become Pre-Enrolled. However, we will not attempt to proceed with Queen Mary Enrolment until you have re-entered the 'Immigration Permission (Visa) Details - Part Two - Visa Upload' section of the Pre-Enrolment task and submitted all documentation required, including evidence that you have arrived in the UK.
If you are unable to provide evidence that you hold valid immigration permission to study with us, we will not be able to proceed with your enrolment. If you complete Pre-Enrolment in full, including uploading evidence of your arrival however the evidence is insufficient, we will contact you via email to inform you of what we require.
Further Documentation Requested
When attempting to finalise your enrolment, we may request additional documentation from you if we do not have everything we need for us to complete a Right of Study check for you.
We will email you to request that you provide any additional documentation and the email subject line is 'QMUL Enrolment: Further Documentation Required'
The most common reason that we will ask you for further documentation is that you have not provided evidence during Pre-Enrolment that you have arrived or were already in the UK. We can only proceed with your enrolment once we have seen evidence that you are in the UK.
Once you have arrived in the UK, you can provide us with a boarding pass or flight/travel ticket by uploading this to MySIS during the Pre-Enrolment task. Please note that this evidence is only acceptable if it shows that you have already travelled i.e., that you are now in the UK.
Other reasons that we may ask you to upload further documentation are
- You have uploaded a Student visa for another institution. Our sponsor licence number is 11W8K9Y63.
- The document(s) you have uploaded are blurry or unclear and we cannot verify the details. New photos/scans are required.
- There is an issue with the file(s) you have uploaded and we cannot open/view them (please re-save and re-upload the files).
- You have an eVisa but have not provided us with a share code or the correct share code (it should begin with 'S').
- You do not have the correct permission to permit study.
How to provide us with your documents
Please do not email your evidence to us as we require it to be uploaded in the Pre-Enrolment task so it is saved against your student record.
When you have the correct documentation that proves your permission/arrival in the UK, please login to MySIS and access the Pre-Enrolment task under 'My Enrolment'. You should re-enter the ‘Immigration Permission (Visa) Details - Part Two - Visa Upload’ section. You should answer the questions and upload all documentation as requested so that we can proceed with your enrolment.
If you are unsure whether you have the correct permission, or, if you do not have the documentation requested and do not think you will have it before the enrolment deadline, please raise an enquiry via AskQM for guidance and include a copy of your passport and any visa related documents that you believe show your permission.
If you have time-limited permission that does not cover the whole programme
Important Information
If you hold a type of immigration permission other than QMUL Student Route visa, your immigration permission does not have to cover the entire programme of study at the point of enrolment. However, if your immigration permission expires before the end of your programme, it is your responsibility to ensure one of the following:
- You request a CAS to apply for a Student visa, although there is no guarantee that this will be provided by the University or that they will be eligible for visa sponsorship.
- You apply to extend your current immigration permission, or apply for alternative immigration permission which allows study in the UK, and provide evidence of this to the University before your current immigration permission expires.
If you are unable to provide further evidence of your Right to Study before the end of your programme of study, you will be deregistered from QMUL and will cease to be a student at the University.
If you are not prepared to accept this risk, you should not enrol. If you do not wish to accept this risk, you may be able to ask the QMUL Admission Office to defer your place until the next intake.
Immigration Permission Types
Within the 'Immigration Permission (Visa) Details - Part Two - Visa Upload' section of the Pre-Enrolment task, once you have confirmed that you are in the UK you will be able to choose which type of immigration permission you hold. You will then be asked a series of questions depending on which visa type you have selected which will enable you to upload or provide all documents or information that we require to process your enrolment.
Below are the types of immigration permission that you can choose from in the task, as well as some for general information.
If you are unsure which immigration permission you hold or do not know what to upload within the Pre-Enrolment task, please raise an enquiry via AskQM with the Enrolment team and include as much information as possible, along with any documents that you think may help us in determining how to support you.
You will need to upload copies of your full BAIL 201 notice and both sides of your Asylum Registration Card (ARC).
We may be required to conduct a Right to Study check with the Home Office before completing your enrolment.
If you applied from overseas and were issued with a vignette (visa sticker), please upload a copy of your stamped vignette as we require proof of your date of entry to the UK. If your vignette is not stamped with your date of entry, please also upload a copy of your boarding pass or flight/travel confirmation as proof.
You will also need to provide a Share code for us to verify your eVisa (must begin with ‘S’ for our purposes).
Only select this category if you do not hold a British passport but have naturalised as a British Citizen.
You will need to upload a clear, colour copy of your full Certificate of naturalisation.
If you do not hold a British passport and have an immigration status for the UK, you are not a British citizen and must select the appropriate immigration category.
If you do hold a passport which confirms your nationality as British Citizen then your record needs to be updated before you proceed with the Pre-Enrolment task. Please follow the guidance under our FAQ entitled 'How can I check / change the nationality on my record?'
Should you have any difficulties, please ensure that you have uploaded your British passport under the 'ID Upload' section and raise an enquiry via AskQM for the Enrolment team to request that your nationality is updated.
If you applied from overseas, please upload a copy of your stamped vignette (visa sticker) as we require proof of your date of entry to the UK. If your vignette is not stamped with your date of entry, please also upload a copy of your boarding pass or flight/travel confirmation as proof.
You will also need to provide a Share code for us to verify your eVisa (must begin with ‘S’ for our purposes).
FOR INFORMATION ONLY - NOT A VISA TYPE FOR SELECTION
If you are a distance learning or online student and have confirmed in the Pre-Enrolment task that you are living/studying in the UK, you must provide evidence of valid immigration permission for the UK that does not prohibit study.
Please choose the appropriate type from the list within the Pre-Enrolment task and upload your evidence.

Further Guidance
I hold valid QMUL Student immigration permission for the programme I intend to study. Can I enrol?
Yes. You can study the programme detailed on the CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies) you used to apply for your Student immigration permission. When you Pre-Enrol online, please provide the following:
Evidence of your immigration permission:
- UKVI decision email and
- vignette (visa sticker) in your passport (if you were issued with one)
- if you have a digital status (eVisa), you must provide us with a share code
Evidence of the date you arrived in the UK:
- If a UK Border Force Officer stamped your passport, you must provide a copy of the Officer's date stamp. The Border Force Officer's date stamp may be on your immigration sticker or another page in your passport.
- If your vignette/passport was not stamped upon arrival, you must provide other evidence of the date you arrived in the UK. You will not receive a stamp if you travel to the UK via the Republic of Ireland or if you use an eGate. The evidence you must provide should be in your name and could be one of the following:
- Your boarding pass
- Your flight/travel ticket OR
- Your booking confirmation
If you applied for your immigration permission inside the UK, you do not need to provide evidence of the date that you arrived in the UK. You can use the date your permission was issued/valid from as your arrival date.
I hold valid QMUL Student immigration permission but it was issued for a programme of studies I have completed, can I enrol?
Yes. If you have completed a programme of studies at QMUL and your Student immigration permission for these studies has not yet expired, you can enrol.
You must submit a new Student immigration application using your new CAS within six weeks of enrolment or before your current immigration permission expires (whichever is sooner).
I hold valid Student immigration permission but it was issued for a programme of studies I completed at a different institution (not QMUL), can I enrol?
No. If you are in the UK, you will have to submit a Student visa application using a CAS issued by QMUL before you can study at QMUL.
The only exceptions to this are for intercollegiate or associate students when further evidence is also required before we can complete enrolment.
I have submitted a Student immigration application with a CAS for my programme of studies at QMUL, but the UKVI has not yet made a decision, can I enrol?
It depends!
If you applied for your Student visa from overseas and have entered the UK before you have received a decision or before the issue date of your permission, you have entered as a Visitor and are not permitted to enrol. You must leave the UK and re-enter AFTER the issue date of your Student permission once granted.
If you are in the UK and have submitted a new Student visa application using your CAS from QMUL, as long as your previous permission was not a Graduate or High Potential Individual Visa, you should be able to enrol. We ask you to provide:
Evidence that you submitted a Student immigration application before your current immigration permission expired
- a share code for your current eVisa
- a copy of your 'Submitted Application' as we are required to check key information is correct
- a copy of your UKVI decision letter/email from when your previous visa was granted
You can download your Submitted Application as a PDF document from your UKVI application account. You may need to click on the link in the e-mail that the UKVI sent you when you started your application. The email from the UKVI may have the subject "UK visa application: sign in details".
Updates about your immigration application
We will periodically contact you to request that you update your student record with the progress of your immigration application. You should respond to these requests even if you are confirming that you have not had a response from the UKVI. If you fail to respond to these requests, you will be at risk of deregistration.
I am not a British or Irish Citizen living in the UK and I do not have a Student visa, can I enrol?
It depends. If your immigration permission does not prohibit study at QMUL, you will be able to enrol.
Types of immigration permission that would prohibit you from studying at QMUL include:
- Any Student immigration permission for study at another institution (not QMUL) where you are not continuing your studies at that institution.
- A Graduate Visa
- A High Potential Individual Visa
Examples of immigration permission which would allow you to study at QMUL (not an exhaustive list):
- as a dependant (husband/wife/partner/child) of someone in the UK
- holders of Skilled/Temporary Worker permission
- holders of UK Ancestry/Youth Mobility/Global Talent permission
- holders of BN(O)/Resettlement Schemes (Afghan'/Ukraine)/Visitor* permission
- Asylum seekers/refugees
- those who have Pre-settled or Settled status via the EU Settlement Scheme
*We can only enrol students with Visitor permission on courses of less than 6 months in duration
Evidence of your current immigration permission
You can find the options for selection in the task and information on the documents required on our Types of Immigration Permission webpage. Evidence required is usually (but not limited to) the following:
- valid immigration sticker, stamp or certificate in your passport or travel document; or
- a share code for us to verify your eVisa
- valid Asylum Registration Card (both sides) and full BAIL 201 notice.
Skilled Workers
Please note that if you hold Skilled Worker permission and are enrolling on a FULL TIME course, we are required to seek confirmation from your employer/sponsor before we can complete your enrolment.
You will need to provide us with a named contact or contact details for your employer's Human Resources team in order for us to contact them by email. Please ensure you check your emails regularly for any requests from us. Failure to respond or provide the necessary information will delay your enrolment.
I am not a British or Irish Citizen but I have settlement in the UK, can I enrol?
Yes!
Examples of 'settlement' immigration permission which would allow you to study at QMUL (not an exhaustive list):
- Indefinite Leave to Enter
- Indefinite Leave to Remain
- Settled status via the EU Settlement Scheme
Evidence of your current immigration permission
Whilst there is no time limit or expiry date for settlement or indefinite leave to remain, you will be required to enter an expiry date in the Immigration Permission (Visa) Details - Part Two - Visa Upload section. Please therefore use the following:
- UK Arrival Date: Date your permission was issued or valid from (if known) OR if you have been in the UK since before 2023, please use the date that you are completing Pre-Enrolment
- Issue Date: As above
- Expiry Date: Please use 31/12/2099 for our purposes.
I have a Graduate Visa. Can I enrol?
No. If you have a Graduate Visa (sometimes referred to as a Post Study Work visa), your immigration conditions prohibit you from studying a course for which you could apply for a Student Visa. You will need to obtain a Student Visa before starting your studies.
There are some exceptions. For example, you cannot apply for a Student Visa for a distance learning only programme. There are also some programmes that QMUL cannot issue a CAS for.
I have an immigration application pending in another category (e.g. dependant, Skilled Worker, Indefinite Leave to Remain), can I still enrol?
It depends. If your previous immigration permission did not prohibit you from studying at QMUL and you submitted your immigration application before that immigration permission expired, you should be able to enrol and continue to study while your immigration application is decided (including any in-time appeal or administrative review).
If you are an EU/EEA national or family member and you have made a late application to the EU Settlement Scheme, you should be able to enrol with your Certificate of Application (verified by a share code) and study while you are waiting for a decision on your application.
You will still need to provide the following:
Evidence of your identity
- valid passport; or
- valid travel document
Evidence of your previous immigration permission
- valid immigration sticker, stamp or certificate in your passport or travel document; or
- share code to verify your eVisa
- a PDF copy of your UKVI decision letter/email from when your previous permission was granted.
If you are waiting on a decision on an EU Settlement Scheme application, you will not need to provide evidence of previous immigration permission but should still provide your 'Certificate of Application' letter and a share code to verify this.
Evidence that you have submitted an immigration application
You will need to provide:
- a copy of your Submitted Application. You can download this as a PDF from your UKVI application account.
Enrolment Risk Waiver
By enrolling without immigration permission that covers the whole of your programme of studies, you are confirming that you understand that:
- If your immigration application (and any subsequent in-time administrative review) is not successful, you will have to interrupt or withdraw from your studies and return home.
- If you have to interrupt or withdraw from your studies because your immigration application is not successful, you will be held liable for the fees for your programme for the whole academic year and you will not be entitled to any refund.
If you are not prepared to accept this risk, you should not enrol. If you do not wish to accept this risk, you may be able to ask the QMUL Admissions Office to defer your place until the next intake.
Updates about your immigration application
We will periodically contact you to request that you update your student record with the progress of your immigration application. You should respond to these requests even if you are just confirming that you have not had a response from the UKVI. If you fail to respond to these requests, you will be at risk of deregistration.
I hold visitor immigration permission, can I enrol on this even though my programme is longer than six months?
No. If your programme is longer than six months, you must obtain a CAS and apply for Student immigration permission to enrol.
If you applied for your Student visa from overseas and have entered the UK before you have received a decision or before the issue date of your permission, you have entered as a Visitor and are not permitted to enrol. You must leave the UK and re-enter AFTER the issue date of your Student permission.
I hold visitor immigration permission and my programme of studies is shorter than my immigration permission. Can I enrol?
Yes. You can enrol provided you can complete your studies within your grant of immigration permission.
I am not sure if my immigration permission allows me to study at QMUL
If you have read the information above and are not sure if your immigration permission allows you to study, please raise an enquiry via AskQM.
In your email, please include a copy of your passport details page and a copy of your most recent immigration sticker, stamp, document from the UKVI confirming your status and a share code for us to verify your eVisa.
If you hold more than one nationality, please provide evidence for each nationality you hold.
If you have an in-time immigration application, which is still to be decided (including any in-time appeal or administrative review), please provide evidence of this (e.g. correspondence from the UKVI/Home Office or Tribunals Service).
