WORLD TB DAY
Today is World TB Day 2026, marking the discovery of TB by Robert Koch in 1882, and this year the theme is ‘Yes! We Can End TB: Led by countries, powered by people’.

Wolfson Institute of Population Health researchers, together with staff from the Queen Mary and Barts Health TB Centre , support high TB burden countries through capacity building and teaching in our unique PG Certificate for TB and through our research.
To address the large global gap in TB detection and treatment, and supported by ISPF funding, Dominik Zenner (WIPH - pictured below) works with researchers, stakeholders and slum populations in Sierra Leone and Mozambique to co-develop and test a QMUL developed prototype AI-powered cough app, which allows early TB detection through analysis of cough sounds. The tool has great potential to close the TB detection gap, but needs field adaptation and close integration into local health systems to be successful.
