SPCS students engage with AI policy leader Lord Tim Clement-Jones

Students from Queen Mary’s School of Physical and Chemical Sciences (SPCS) recently welcomed leading AI policy expert Tim Clement-Jones for a thought-provoking session on the future of Artificial Intelligence.

Lord Clement-Jones, a member of the House of Lords and co-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Artificial Intelligence, spoke to BSc Applied AI students about the growing impact of AI on society and the urgent need for effective regulation.

The event highlighted the engagement and curiosity of our students, who led an energetic Q&A session. They explored topics ranging from improving AI awareness in schools to the ethical challenges posed by rapid technological advancement, including the possibility of future dystopian scenarios.

The visit coincided with the end of the students’ first year on the Applied AI programme, marking an important milestone. It also showcased the strength of the our student community, with participants demonstrating confidence, critical thinking, and a strong interest in shaping the future of AI.

Following the discussion, students continued conversations with Lord Clement-Jones during an informal networking session over coffee, further reflecting the collaborative and inquisitive spirit within the School.

The event underlined the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences’ commitment to providing students with direct access to influential figures at the forefront of AI policy and innovation.
