Politics and International Relations student, Kali's parliament placement experience
Kali, a Politics and International Relations student at Queen Mary University of London, shares their experience of the Parliamentary Studies Internship.

How did you secure your placement?
I secured this placement by selecting the Parliamentary module in my first semester and subsequently applying for the Parliamentary internship. As part of the module, there was a workshop that provided guidance on the application process, which I found very useful. Using this advice, I tailored my CV specifically to the role and completed the application. In addition to my CV, I answered questions, including which parties I would prefer to work for and whether I would consider roles such as working with Select Committees.
I was fortunate to hear back quickly and, in my case, did not need to go through an interview process, although most people on the placement did.
What does your day-to-day look like on placement?
My day-to-day work is varied but focused. I regularly produce policy briefs, respond to constituent emails using Caseworker, and support communications by editing videos and creating social media content using VEED. Alongside this, I conduct research for campaigns and upcoming meetings, often balancing multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
I have also gained valuable exposure to parliamentary proceedings.
Attending Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs) was a highlight, offering a firsthand view of political debate and scrutiny. Observing this alongside a Defence Committee session deepened my understanding of accountability in UK politics. In addition, I have contributed to media and campaign work, including drafting a local newspaper column on banning social media for under-16s.
What skills are you developing?
Through this placement, I have developed a wide range of skills. My research and analytical abilities have improved significantly, particularly when working with complex or limited information. I have strengthened my time management by balancing multiple deadlines and tasks, and enhanced my communication skills through drafting briefings and engaging with MPs’ offices.
I have also developed technical skills in video editing, an area I was particularly keen to improve, alongside growing confidence in a professional environment.
How is the placement helping your career prospects?
This placement has greatly enhanced my career prospects. It has provided practical insight into policymaking and political communication, while also building my confidence in a professional political setting. In interviews since starting the placement, employers have shown strong interest in my Parliamentary experience, and it has been a valuable addition to my CV.
Would you recommend the placement?
I would strongly recommend this placement opportunity. It provides an excellent chance to develop key skills, gain a deeper understanding of UK politics, and build valuable professional connections.
Anything else you'd like to share?
Overall, this placement has been both challenging and rewarding. It has pushed me to adapt, think critically, and contribute to meaningful work, making it an invaluable step in my career journey.
