Queen Mary is proud to have hosted Commonwealth scholars for many years. Commonwealth Masters Scholarships are for candidates from low- and middle-income Commonwealth countries, for full-time study at a UK university.

Co-funded by Queen Mary and UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), Commonwealth Masters Scholarships enable talented and motivated individuals to gain the knowledge and skills required for sustainable development, and are aimed at those who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK. These scholarships are offered under six themes:

  1. Science and technology for development
  2. Improving population health, health systems and capacity
  3. Promoting innovation and entrepreneurship 
  4. Strengthening peace, security and governance
  5. Strengthening resilience and response to crises
  6. Access, inclusion and opportunity

Eligibility

To apply for these scholarships, you must:

  • Be a citizen of or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person
  • Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country
  • Be available to start your academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September 2026.
  • By September 2026, hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) honours standard, or a lower second class degree (2:2) and a relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a Masters degree).
  • The CSC would not normally fund a second UK Masters degree
  • If you are applying for a second UK Masters degree, you will need to provide justification as to why you wish to undertake this study. Applicants who have already studied at Master’s level in the UK will not be considered eligible
  • Be unable to afford to study in the UK without this scholarship
  • Have provided all supporting documentation in the required format

Scholarship applications must be made on the Commonwealth Scholarships Portal – CSC Central.

You must also apply to Queen Mary for admission to the Masters programme as well as make an application for the scholarship. It is our understanding that you do not require an offer letter at the point of application to CSC. However, it is the student's responsibility to thoroughly read and understand the terms and conditions set out by the CSC.

Saher Sajid Commonwealth Masters Scholar

Saher is studying for a Masters in Artificial Intelligence in our School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science. At Queen Mary, Saher enjoys the heart-warming experience of being surrounded by people from many different backgrounds. She has noted the wide range of courses available at Queen Mary and suggests to future applicants that they give a lot of thought to what you want to study, thereby allowing staff to offer support and help organise your programme and place you on your desired track.

Saher particularly enjoys the study environment at Queen Mary, highlighting "the opportunity of being surrounded by so many passionate people, doing amazing work in a field that I am passionate about."
