Data protection and confidentiality

The Student Support Service operates on a strictly confidential basis, within the parameters of the Data Protection Act 2018, which aligns Maltese Law with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). 

However, it may be beneficial to share some of your information with other staff members within the school, to ensure a holistic support framework is being offered, for example academic staff in the Subject Examination Board (SEBs) meetings which follow the examination season.  

Only in exceptionally rare circumstances will we share your data without your consent. There are two specific situations where this may occur: 

  • Fitness to Study policy – if you meet the threshold outlined in the Fitness to Study policy, we are required to share relevant information with designated colleagues at Queen Mary University. You can find more information about the Fitness to Study process on Queen Mary's Policies by category webpage, it titled Enhanced Support for a Students' Fitness to Study Policy, located in the Other subsection in the Teaching, learning and assessment category.  
  • At immediate risk - if you are at immediate risk of harming yourself or others, we may need to share information in order to ensure the safety of yourself or others.
