Ed was a former critical care nurse and now is a Senior Lecturer in healthcare law and bioethics at the University of Liverpool's School of Law and Social Justice, focussing on child health issues and research ethics.
He has published widely on the ethical and legal issues that arise in the provision or non-provision of medical interventions for intersex and gender diverse children and adolescents.
He has also published on and undertaken research that considers the scope of best interests in children and young people's healthcare. Ed maintains an active interest in, and has published on, children's experiences of healthcare, focussing on children's rights, decision-making and clinical holding.
Ed has worked with, and remains part of, research projects using both theoretical, legal and empirical approaches to develop publications, pragmatic guidance and resources for healthcare professionals, researchers, young people and their families.
He also leads the clinical ethics service at Alder Hey Children's Hospital, supporting children, their families and their clinical teams with complex and difficult ethical issues as they arise in the provision of care.
