Patricia Garcia (Criminal Justice LLM, 2023) updates us on her newly published book and her attendance of the launch of the UK Alumni Network in Portugal, hosted by the British Embassy.

Patricia says: “I completed my LLM degree at Queen Mary University of London in 2023, where I had the privilege of writing my final dissertation on the prevention of money laundering, under the supervision of Professor Peter Alldridge. That dissertation has since been developed into a book, which will be formally launched on 2nd February. It is also available online (The Portuguese Transposition of the 5th Anti-Money Laundering Directive)Patricia Garcia

After completing my studies, I returned to Portugal, where I am currently practising as a Criminal lawyer. Publishing this book has been a very meaningful milestone for me, and it felt only natural to acknowledge the academic journey that began at Queen Mary and the professors who played such an important role in it.

Recently I was honoured to be invited to attend the official launch of the UK Alumni Network in Portugal, hosted by the British Embassy and HM Ambassador Lisa Bandari, together with the UK Alumni Network Steering Group. It was a pleasure to reconnect with colleagues from different UK universities and especially meaningful to be there as a Queen Mary University of London alumna. Patricia Garcia Book

It was also a privilege to hear from Professor Dapo Akande, UK candidate for the International Court of Justice (ICJ), Chichele Professor of Public International Law and Fellow of All Souls College, University of Oxford, Co-Director of the Oxford Institute for Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict (ELAC), and UK member of the International Law Commission. His remarks highlighted the importance of international legal cooperation and the continued role of alumni networks in strengthening global connections (as well as commenting on the weather, as a British always must).

I very much look forward to actively collaborating with this newly launched network and to strengthening connections with fellow alumni. I am confident this new group will create valuable opportunities for engagement, knowledge exchange, and meaningful partnerships. Thank you to the British Embassy and the Steering Group for bringing together such an inspiring UK alumni community in Portugal.”
